Secure remote access to test track data – Welotec VPN Security Suite in use at the BMW Group

For vehicle development and testing of new driver assistance systems, the BMW Group uses various test tracks, whereby many driving tests can only be carried out under certain weather and road conditions. Before deploying the Welotec VPN Security Suite, test drivers* estimated whether the environmental conditions and road conditions would allow a planned test based on general weather data before heading from the development center to the test track. However, the actual conditions of the test track and the exact weather data could then only be viewed on site and often resulted in the planned test not being able to be carried out.
With the Welotec VPN Security Suite, the test drivers of the BMW Group have secure remote access to the measurement data of the respective test track and the local weather station via an OpenVPN client from their office workstation. With the help of various sensors, the asphalt temperature of the test track, for example, can be measured and viewed in addition to the weather data (including air temperature and wind speed). In addition, this data is stored together with the vehicle measurement data of the tests driven and enables better comparability under different environmental conditions.
