Fanless industrial DIN-Rail PC – Welotec Arrakis Series

The DIN rail PC Arrakis Pico Mk3 is fanless, passively cooled and has no moving parts. Nevertheless, the small and particularly flat housing with an Intel Atom processor and 8 GB DDR4 RAM hides enough power for demanding applications with Windows and Linux. The device and the components were developed for use in harsh industrial environments. The rugged chassis and large cooling surface protect the industrial PC from dust and moisture exposure while providing high tolerance to temperature fluctuations, humidity, and vibration.

Intel Atom processor and 8 GB DDR4 RAM

The low-power embedded Intel Atom® x5 processor E3940 has 4 cores with a CPU clock speed of 1.6 GHz. The processor and the 8 GB LP-DDR4 RAM are soldered onto the mainboard. Due to the low power dissipation (TDP) of 9.5 watts, the generated heat can be dissipated well by the processor. Due to the four LP-DDR4 memory channels, the Arrakis achieves 1900 Passmark points with minimal power consumption. The NVMe SSD ensures very short load times and accelerated boot processes.

Many interfaces

Especially with devices for the DIN rail, the interfaces may only be on the front, top and bottom. The Arrakis Pico Mk3 makes optimal use of the case space.
– Front: 3x Gigabit Ethernet, 3x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0 and 1x HDMI
– Bottom: Power supply, RS-232, RS-485, digital input and digital output
– Top side: 2x SMA for 4G LTE and 5G option, 2x SMA reverse for WLAN
When using the 4G LTE / 5G option, a SIM card can be installed on the back behind the DIN rail.

Arrakis Mk3 vs. Arrakis Pico Mk3

Compared to the compact Arrakis Mk3, the Arrakis Pico Mk3 is once again significantly smaller. Due to the additional size, the Arrakis Mk3 is more modular and additionally supports e.g. two LTE modules, CAN bus, LTE and WLAN and other options.

Robust DIN rail mount for installation in the control cabinet

On the back of the system is a robust premium DIN rail mount. This means that the DIN rail systems hold well on the DIN rail even in the event of vibrations, shocks, and oscillations. In addition, the device can be easily mounted and dismounted on the DIN rail. This makes DIN rail mounting extremely simple.

DIN rail IPC with 24 V DC

The Arrakis Pico Mk3 can be operated directly with 12 V DC and 24 V DC. In most control cabinets, a DC power supply with 24 V is already available. The advantage is that the DIN rail IPC can be used directly in the control cabinet without an extra power supply.

Advantages of fanless DIN rail systems

Fanless systems offer advantages over conventional, actively cooled systems, especially in dusty and dirty environments. Because there are no moving parts in the SSD memory or in the industrial PC, there is no mechanical wear. The heat from the processor, memory and the integrated controllers must be conducted out of the housing by heat conducting housings and heat sinks. Fanless industrial computer are quieter, more reliable, and more durable than units with moving parts. Super fast industrial NVMe SSD

Currently there are only a few industrial PC systems with the super-fast NVMe SSD on the market. The Arrakis Pico Mk3 has an integrated M.2. NVMe SSD and thus offers significantly more speed when reading and writing larger amounts of data. The boot process is also significantly accelerated. The NVMe has double the read speed compared to a SATA model of the same series.

Integrated TPM 2.0

Especially for industrial applications, secure storage for certificates and keys is crucial. The Arrakis Pico Mk3 comes with an integrated TPM 2.0 as standard.

DIN rail PC with 4G LTE and 5G

As an option, the DIN rail PC has 4G LTE and 5G. The option is installed ex works. The 5G module is downward compatible and supports 4G LTE. There are two SMA antenna connectors on the top of the case for external 5G antennas. The 5G module supports many 5G, LTE and UMTS bands. Due to the two external antenna connectors, 2×2 MIMO is supported by the industrial PC and download rates of over one Gigabit can be achieved. Alternatively, to MIMO, a GNSS positioning service (GPS, Galileo, Glonass, BeiDou) can be used.

Operating system for the industrial PC

The Arrakis-Pico Mk3 supports Windows 10 IoT and Windows 10 Pro as well as all current Linux distributions such as Ubuntu. For Linux and Windows there are up-to-date drivers for all functions. In addition to standard Windows and Linux distributions, the industrial PC also supports container applications and Docker containers.

Windows 10 IoT vs. Windows 10 Pro

Windows 10 IoT is the successor of Windows Embedded. With flexible licensing, easy activation and its custom settings, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is the best operating system for use in industrial environments. As the successor to Windows Embedded Standard, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise provides the same functionality as the desktop version of Windows 10 Enterprise but excludes unwanted user-facing features. The Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) of Windows 10 IoT provides security patches without feature changes for ten years. Thus, an industrial PC with Windows 10 IoT is a long-term available solution.

Cloud certification with Azure and AWS

The Arrakis Pico Mk3 is certified with major cloud providers and their IoT solutions. These include Microsoft Azure IoT Hub with IoT Edge and the Edge Runtime, and Amazon with AWS Greengrass 2.0 (in preparation).
