Industrial routers are expected to be robust devices for harsh environmental conditions as well as classic interfaces and protocols of the automation world. The special feature of the TK800 LTE routers is the combination of these features with management functions and network features that could only be found in the IT world. Together with specially developed software solutions, the TK800 routers are always the first choice when it comes to integrating a particularly large number of devices in complex networks with high security requirements. LTE

Dual-APN - Separation of data
Two virtual networks, each with its own IP address space, separate user and management data. Dual-APN thus significantly increases security when communicating with several market participants via a router. This separation is also a part of smart metering and it is also a requirement from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI Germany).

  • The user data network is used for the transmission of application data. This allows data to be communicated to various market participants such as energy providers, network operators or smart meter gateway administrators.
  • The management network serves for transmission, the data for maintenance of the network infrastructure. This is used to import changed configurations or new firmware for the routers.

LTE for maximum network coverage
The TK800 Series routers are available in both 4G LTE and 3G UMTS versions. LTE, the fourth-generation wireless standard, enables you to achieve higher speeds and lower latency. However, more importantly, it is the better network coverage from providers, especially in rural areas. The use of diversity or MIMO antennas also ensures better reception and higher data throughput rates. All routers are backwards compatible in the mobile radio standard. The LTE/4G variant also supports 3G (HSPA+, HSUPA, HSDPA, UMTS) and 2G (EDGE, GPRS, GSM). If the network with the highest standard is not available or reception is to weak, the system automatically switches to the next best network.

Higher availability with Dual SIM
Increase the availability of your systems with two SIM cards from different mobile network providers. If a network failure or malfunction occurs at one provider, the router automatically switches to another network with the help of the second SIM card.

Flexible VPN Options
Stable VPN connections are high on the list of requirements of most energy companies. However, the requirements differ in the details. The TK800 series has many VPN options and adapts ideally to your IT concept.

OpenVPN
OpenVPN is free software for setting up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) via an encrypted TLS connection. The OpenSSL library is used for encryption. OpenVPN uses either UDP or TCP for data transport.

IPsec
The TK800 LTE routers support Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) Site-to-Site VPN and Internet Key Exchange (IKE) protocols in versions IKEv1 & IKEv2.

Dynamic Multipoint VPN (DMVPN)
With Dynamic Multipoint VPN (DMVPN) you can create scalable IPsec Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) with centralized architecture. In large networks, this greatly simplifies implementation and management.

GOOSE via WAN with L2TPv3
With the TK800 series you can master the challenge of the Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) network protocol, which is specified in the IEC 61850 standard. GOOSE is one of the IEC 61850 protocols depicted on "Layer 2 (ISO/OSI stack)". The TK800 routers enable low latency L2TPv3 tunneling and provide a virtual local network to simulate a local Ethernet connection.

Security

Firewall
The TK800 series has an integrated firewall with high security requirements. In addition to stateful packet inspection, the routers also support access control lists, intrusion protection IP/MAC binding and much more.

Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA)
Highest security with intelligent AAA management. The devices are able to use local and server-based AAA solutions such as TACACS+, RADIUS and more for authentication.

Next Generation Encryption (NGE)
Next Generation Encryption includes the best cryptographic algorithms in terms of security and scalability that can be implemented today to ensure network security in the coming years. The LTE routers of the TK800 series meet especially strict security requirements for IT infrastructures with TLS1.2 with PFS, AES 256, AES 384, IKEv2 and SHA256.

Interfaces

Ethernet connectivity - IEC 61850 ready
The Ethernet interfaces are used, for example, to connect IEC 61850 and IEC 60870-5-104 based station control technology such as station master computers, power switches, inverters, energy meters etc. The TK800 LTE routers are available in different hardware versions. For smaller local network stations the version with two Ethernet ports is often sufficient. For applications requiring higher connectivity, the version with integrated 5-port Ethernet switch is available. In all versions, the ports are designed as Fast Ethernet RJ45.

Serial Interfaces
Older I&C systems are connected via serial RS-232 or RS-485 interfaces. Use existing IEC 60870-5-101 or Modbus telecontrol, the TK800 LTE routers convert old serial protocols to newer TCP/IP based. IEC 60870-5-101 to IEC 60870-5-104 conversion and Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP conversion

Digital In- & Output
One digital input and a relay output are available as further interfaces. The digital input can be used, for example, for a door contact in a local network station. When opening the door, a message is sent and possible manipulations or vandalism can be detected faster.

Connection and Application Supervision
High availability of the connection and thus also the reliability of the application is guaranteed by extended watchdog, connection and application monitoring functions:

  • Embedded hardware watchdog for automatic system recovery in case of errors
  • PPP Layer Detection - Checking the mobile phone connection
  • Network Scan (ICMP) - Internet and Network Connection Scan
  • VPN tunnel verification for a reliable VPN connection
  • VPN Tunnel End-to-End Monitoring (ICMP) - For verifying the data connection in the VPN tunnel
  • Functions and interfaces can be switched off to harden the system

Configuration via Web and CLI
An intuitive web interface is available for configuring the TK800 routers. Network administrators, on the other hand, usually prefer the text file-based configuration in the CLI (command-line interface). The CLI of the TK800 series makes experienced network administrators immediately feel at home.

Fully IPv6 compatible
Large projects must have investment security. To ensure future security, we have implemented the first full IPv6 implementation in the field in cooperation with the major mobile network operators and a module manufacturer. The result of these efforts is an IPv6 router via LTE including SLAAC, DHCPv6 and DHCPv6-PD is supported.

Python applications
A special feature of the TK800 series is the possibility to run your own Python based applications on the router. This turns the router into a versatile IoT gateway and performs tasks that would otherwise require additional hardware. For example, signals can be preprocessed and edge-computing functionalities can be used.

Rugged Metal Housing
According to your industrial requirements, the electronics are built into high-quality metal housings in order to effectively protect the devices from external influences. The operating temperature range from -25°C to +70°C allows use in demanding and harsh environments. The TK800 is also highly electromagnetic compatible to EN61000-4, making it ideal for use in challenging industrial environments. The LTE router has a DIN rail mounting bracket on the rear for mounting in the control cabinet.

High MTBF Times
Specially selected components and effective thermal management enable long MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) times in the field and a long service life, thus guaranteeing higher reliability and low maintenance costs.
